Chapter Seven:

Hell Beneath Sage

Zack watched from the shadows, brow furrowed as he saw a large group of men dragging two bodies through a doorway inside the diner. The last person to go through the door was the mayor, his white hair standing out in the dimly lit restaurant. Zack spied the bright gingery gleam of Mick’s hair, his massive frame limp. A much smaller, frailer figure could only be Jamie. Zack cursed to himself. Mick should have had back-up.

Dialling his cell phone, Zack called Pace and left a message, then sent a call to the ranch, letting them know where the mayor was.

“I’m going in,” Zack said grimly, ignoring Murphy’s shout of warning before cutting the connection. He had a good idea of the geography of the tunnel system from the maps and wasn’t a complete idiot. It would be suicidal to enter right after the mayor and his mercenaries.

Zack turned to head to another possible entrance, bumping into a familiar figure. Pace.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Pace demanded, scowling at Zack, green eyes sharp as lasers. He had been on his way to get Zack when the message came through. He’d hurried to stop Zack doing something stupidly suicidal.

“Mick and Jamie just got seven shades of shit beaten out of them. They took them through a door in the diner, I think to the tunnel system. I’m going in after them. The mayor’s down there, too.” Zack glared right back, daring Pace to argue.

Pace began to speak, Zack interrupting before he could.

“Mick’s one of my best friend Pace. He’s saved my life more than once. I owe him.” Zack stuck his nose forward, a bare millimetre from Pace’s. “I’m going in.”

They kept the eye lock going for several seconds, which practically hummed with tension before Pace gave in. Snorting he placed a light kiss on the very tip of Zack’s pugnacious nose, then grinned slightly before stepping back.

“After you, sweet cheeks.” Zack rolled his eyes then turned, all business as they began discussing ways of getting inside the underground network of passages.

Pace headed to his vehicle, retrieving a bunch of firearms and handing a shotgun and assault rifle to Zack.

“Let’s get going, then.” He grinned wickedly, eyes shining. “This should be fun.” Zack stared in amazement at the light of excitement in those green eyes, shaking his head.

“You sound just like Joe.” He grinned as Pace frowned instantly, not liking being compared to the rancher.

“Me first?” Zack headed inside the diner, staring up at the camera which he had noted earlier. He’d wondered at the time why a crappy little diner needed such a sophisticated system. Now he knew what secrets the place had to guard.

The plan was a simple one. Cause a scene and see how many undesirables popped out of the woodwork. Since Zack was known to several people under the mayor’s thumb, he had volunteered to act as bait.

Helping himself to coffee, Zack eyed the camera with a smirk, trying to think of a way that would really irritate a homophobic bunch of morons who wanted to take over the world.
